Transvaginal Mesh Attorneys
Transvaginal Mesh Claims in Virginia
Transvaginal mesh – also known as pelvic mesh, vaginal mesh, and bladder slings – are surgical devices that are implanted through the vagina or abdomen to support tissues in the pelvic floor that have been damaged by injury, childbirth, or surgery. Transvaginal mesh has been used primarily to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP), in which a woman’s bladder or uterus slides out of place, and stress urinary incontinence (SUI), which is an involuntary discharge of urine that most often occurs during physical activity.
Due to an increasing number of health problems linked to transvaginal mesh, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an advisory regarding the devices. The Virginia product liability attorneys in Virginia at Kalfus & Nachman PC are currently evaluating potential cases from patients who claim to have been harmed by transvaginal mesh.

Transvaginal Mesh Complications
For years, transvaginal mesh—also known as a bladder sling—has been used to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in women.
However, increasing reports of severe health complications related to this medical device induced a recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory and prompted numerous lawsuits against manufacturers of transvaginal mesh.
These surgical mesh devices are used in the treatment of POP, in which a woman’s uterus or bladder can slide out of place, and SUI, an involuntary release of urine that occurs primarily during physical activity. According to the FDA’s latest review, however, mounting evidence indicates that transvaginal mesh is potentially ineffective and may actually pose more risks than benefits.
In recent years, the FDA has received more than 3,000 complaints health problems from women who have undergone transvaginal mesh surgery. These complications include:
- Erosion of the mesh into the vagina
- Infection
- Injury to surrounding organs
- Internal bleeding
- Pelvic pain
- Urinary complications
- Vaginal pain
These side-effects have been tied to transvaginal mesh manufactured by a number of leading medical device companies including:
- American Medical Systems
- Boston Scientific
- C.R. Bard
- Covidien
- Ethicon
- Johnson & Johnson
Understanding Your Rights
