Nexium Lawsuit
Attorneys Representing Norfolk, Newport News, Roanoke & Nearby Areas of Virginia
Have you taken Nexium ("the purple pill") or another PPI drug like Prilosec or Prevacid? These drugs are used to prevent acid reflux and to help patients with esophageal problems heal. They are also used in the treatment of ulcers. However, if you take these drugs you may be at risk for severe kidney problems. If you experienced these symptoms, our Virginia pharmaceutical injury lawyers may be able to help you.
According to Dr. Morgan Grams, an assistant epidemiology professor at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, users of PPIs have a 20 to 50 percent increased risk of chronic kidney disease.
Dr. Grams said that the risk increased when the dose increased. And even for those using the drug short term, there is still the potential of experiencing kidney problems, including injury or inflammatory diseases.
Also, an article by the American Society of Nephrology, did research into whether PPI increases the risk of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or chronic kidney disease (CKD). Their findings support Dr. Grams’ claims that patients taking PPI drugs experienced an increase in kidney-related diseases.
As a result of this and other studies, there is a class-action lawsuit for those who were prescribed Nexium.
According to one lawsuit filed against pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca (distributors of Nexium), the company failed to warn users about the potentially dangerous side effects of using Nexium.
They claim AstraZeneca committed:
- Common law fraud
- Fraudulent misrepresentation
- Product liability
- Negligent misrepresentation
- Negligent/intentional infliction of emotional distress
This lawsuit and others claim that Nexium and other PPIs can cause kidney failure, hip fractures, bone problems, pneumonia, and other diseases.

Some patients may need to take PPI drugs because their symptoms are so severe. But there are things that could be tried instead of putting your kidneys and bones at risk.
For patients who do not wish to take a chance using one of these PPI medications, there are lifestyle changes that can be made, including:
- Not smoking
- Eating smaller meals
- Losing weight
- Wearing looser clothing
- Avoid eating 2-3 hours before resting
