About Actos
Actos was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1999 for use in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes and a condition that affects tens of millions of people.
Actos, also known as pioglitazone, works by reducing the body’s resistance to insulin, allowing it to better regulate blood-glucose levels. In the years since it hit the market, Actos has been tied to an increasing number of medical risks.
In June 2011, the FDA called for new, more explicit warnings regarding the potential dangers of Actos. Of course, these warnings arrived after thousands of patients had been prescribed the drug. Although the FDA has not issued an Actos recall, the drug has been banned in a number of countries, including France. Other European countries have suspended the sale of Actos pending further study.
Possible Actos Dangers
Although most recent attention has focused on studies linking Actos to bladder cancer, the diabetes drug may also increase your risk for:
- Abdominal fractures in female patients
- Heart attacks
- Heart failure
- Liver damage
- Rhabdomyolysis, a condition that can lead to kidney failure
Actos is also thought to contribute to fluid retention in some patients. Although fluid retention alone is not necessarily dangerous, fluid retention in patients who also suffer from congestive heart problems can be deadly.
