General Motors Recall

Attorneys representing Norfolk, Newport News, Roanoke & nearby areas of Virginia

Since February of 2014, General Motors (GM) has recalled more than 30 million vehicles for various malfunctioning parts. The recalls have been for everything from malfunctioning hoods to suspensions; fuel pumps to electrical problems. However, the main focus of the GM recall has been faulty ignition switches.

The faulty ignition switches can cause a vehicle to lose its power steering and power breaking abilities. It can also cause the airbag to fail to deploy in the case of an accident. When the ignition switches fail, the driver is unable to steer the vehicle properly, which has caused hundreds of injuries and upwards of 30 deaths.

To date, the vehicles being recalled due to faulty ignition switches include the following:

  • 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt
  • 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR
  • 2005-2006 Pontiac G4
  • 2007 Pontiac G5
  • 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit
  • 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice
  • 2003-2007 Saturn Ion
  • 2007 Saturn Sky

GM Ignition Compensation Claims Resolution Facility

On June 30, 2014, an announcement was made involving the terms of compensation for victims of the faulty ignition switches. The compensation fund was established to financially aid automobile accident victims killed or physically injured as a result of defective GM ignition switches in certain GM automobiles. Kenneth Feinberg was put in charge of the fund and has created the following categories that outline those that can apply for compensation:

    • Category 1: Injury claims, or those resulting in quadriplegia, paraplegia, double amputation, permanent brain damage or pervasive burns
    • Category 2: Injury claims, or injuries that required a hospital visit within 48 hours of an accident

Even those that had previously settled claims against GM and then were made aware of the ignition switch defect may re-file a claim against GM.

Kenneth Feinberg recently extended the filing deadline for any GM faulty ignition switch lawsuits to January 31, 2015.

If you are going to file a lawsuit against GM for injuries you sustained due to a defective and recalled vehicle, please contact our Roanoke attorneys online today or call (855) 880-8163.
