Since last year, the number of dog bite claims filed across the US has
dipped 7.2% to 15,352 total claims. Dog bites are one of the most common
reasons for homeowner liability claims, and account for
over one-third of those claims. Despite the slight decrease in the number
of incidents filed, the average cost of those claims has risen roughly
$5,000 in the same time period. That's due to a combination of bigger
settlements and increased medical expenses. And in total, the average
cost of a dog bite injury claim has nearly doubled since 2003. Even though
the total number of incidents has slightly decreased, one modern innovation
is bringing more risk to a certain group—online shopping and mail
carriers. It's a classic TV and movie stereotype, but for many mail
carriers the threat of dog bites is a very real part of their work day.
If you're expecting a package, be sure to keep your dog safely inside
and away from any confrontations with the delivery driver—both your
dog and the driver are just trying to do their job, after all. Besides
that, be cautious of introducing your pets to new environments, and warn
young children not to bother animals who are sleeping or eating. Even
the sweetest dog can bite in a moment of fear. #dogbitepreventionweek2016
